The Hearts and Resilience of Mylankadu

Situated just a twenty-minute drive north of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, and adjoining the Chunnakam village area, lies Mylankadu—a vibrant community of over 800 families. The village is primarily comprised of hardworking agricultural laborers who serve as the economic backbone of the local landscape. However, beneath this industrious spirit lies a history deeply impacted by protracted post-war consequences, resulting in a high proportion of sole-breadwinner households navigating profound vulnerabilities daily.

For generations, families here have also confronted the rigid structural barriers of the historic Jaffna caste system, which has systematically manifested as a historic denial of equal educational opportunities, land ownership, and social equity. This systemic exclusion has created compounding financial hurdles to accessing consistent foundational learning, functional English literacy, and modern digital competencies.

The Opportunity: The youth of Mylankadu do not lack innate talent, intelligence, or ambition; they simply lack access to the resource pipelines that foster confidence. CYDC was established to permanently dismantle these barriers. By introducing a culture of educational perseverance and long-term mentorship, we work alongside this resilient community to break cycles of structural immobility and empower the next generation to claim their future.
